Firsts win and win - Sunday seconds join in 05/14/2012
Cricket at last and in the Lincolnshire Premier league Deeping unleashed their Aussie import on Boston. Tom Atallah's five for 19 ensured that Boston posted just 103, with Ali Sharp (1-20), Matt Rose (1-30) and rabbit hunting Karl Green (2-11) also in the wickets. Deeping lost three wickets but 58 from Jaimie Morgan ensured that they came home with a large points haul. At Deeping in South Lincs 1 the seconds crucially lost the toss, and despite some sensible and cautious batting throughout, wickets fell steadily as Sleaford 2nds bowlers performed tidily. Nick Andrews and Ryan Bainborough emerged with some credit but 116 for six wasn't going to be enough as the pitch dried out rapidly, Sleaford's aerial attack getting home by seven wickets with overs in hand. Sunday saw the culmination of many plans as Deeping began to reap the benefits of their double relegation last season and another year of improvement from their youngsters. At Deeping Ali Sharp's nippers took on a young Wisbech side in Rutland Division 2. So effective was their youthful bowling attack that Tom Attalah bowled just one over to remove the danger man Frear while wickets came from the often-forgotten bowling arm of Alex Wheatley with a staggering 6-24 off 6.2 overs. He was backed up by two wickets in two balls from Sam Pateman (2-25) and one for Matty Rose as Wisbech totalled just 86. Fantasy Cricket entrants will take note of Wheat's extra point scoring potential. Deeping didn't bat brilliantly but five scores in double figures (including 17* from Wheats) saw them home for five wickets down. Deeping go second in Div 2. Over at Spalding in Div 7 Deeping combined the club's second oldest player with a debut for 11 year old Nick Green who opened the batting. After a nervy start which saw both openers dropped more than once, and the loss of Richard Williams, Nick (13), debutant Ed Tattersall (19) gave Deeping a small base and when Josh Lewis (16) and Aron Singh came together the runs began to flow. Deeping reckoned that 130 was a par score on a flat but slow and helpful track but Singh smashed 50 and with some nurdling by the tail Deeping made 142-9, JP calmly seeing out a maiden off the last over... Spalding had bowled well but Deeping bowled better producing the best display by a Sunday 2nds in several years. Patrick Brown was almost unplayable in six overs taking 2-4, the maestro JP locked up the other end (3-23) then young Green was back in action taking 1-1 of five overs (which could have been three if his Dad and Steve Windsor could catch). Jack Baxter then bravely threw the ball up inviting the slog and ended up with 2-25 before Ed Tatershall (2-5) needed just five balls to clean up the tail. Spalding 81A/O. Deeping go top of Div 7. Add Comment Long Sutton 2nd X1 30 AO V MDCC Sunday 2nd XI 32-1 The chosen one offers his own unique report... Sunday 15th April and I pull back the curtains to reveal a sunny day. Not long to go, so into the garage to sort out the bag. Good news - the kit's not been eaten by mice during the winter but that’s probably down to the two pairs of socks still in the bag from the last game of the season. Whites look ok though, and Rita should be able to get those grass stains out next week (she won’t know that they were in the bag with my socks). Time to go and open the door to be met by a cold blast of arctic wind. Not exactly cricket season weather so started my pre-match warm-up on the way: “Joe turn my heated seat on will you”. Outside temp, 5 bloody degrees!! On the way the phone rings, its J.P. “Molly, I’m lost, I’m in Holbeach, where’s Long Sutton?” It didn’t help that the navigator was Dan (Peaky 2) George. Explaining new co ordinates was therefore a challenge especially as they were now heading for Sleaford. In the changing room 10 youths and one old fossil (me). Long Sutton skipper says “No point tossing up as we know what we want to do” Special One “so do I” L.S.S. “we want to bowl” Special One “Heads it is then” The 50p landed slightly one way, so I picked it up quickly “Lucky me, Heads it is, we will have a bowl, enjoy your bat!” Rosie opened up and came charging in and let fly, straight down leg side and Bowers was at full stretch from the off. He continued to bowl leg side theory. Peaky 2 came on the other end and immediately found a good line and length, and after three attempts to hit Peaky 2 from outside off stump to cow corner the fourth ball saw the bails fly off. Rosie continued with his leg side theory and eventually the other opener smashed one to mid wicket where the Special One rolled back the years to take off full length to his left and take a one handed stinger for an early season contender for “catch of the year (to be fair it was a dolly, but you know how legends are made!). Rosie then cleaned out next man in and was on a hat trick. All the field closed in on the young lad facing, Rosie delivered and he chipped it to shortish cover. Mikey Holden took off slower than a hot air balloon laden down with sandbags and the ball escaped. Old man Bowers shouts “What’s Macca doing there he’s usually in the slips!! Peaky 2 also lived up to his new found status. We required a shortish cover to be brought in after taking a wicket. “ I’ll go in there" says Dan. "That will be an achievement, you're bowling”. Rosie and Peaky 2 were soon replaced as Captain Cook Pearson sensing some early season rabbit hunting was in fear of not getting a bowl. Rosie 6 Overs-3 Maidens-7 Runs-2 Wkts, Peaky 2 6 Overs-2 Maidens-9 Runs-3 Wkts. J.P. helped himself to a collection of wickets with a spell of hostile bowling and figures of 4.2 Overs-2 Maidens-3 Runs-4 Wkts with Sam Pateman 4 Overs-0 Maidens-11 Runs-0 Wkts. Peaky 2 managed to get a run out as a suicidal run was called. He fired one in for Bowers to run out the bat by ¾ of a length. Long Sutton bowled out for 30 and Henry was in no mood for tea, oh no he was on for an early one... We needed to knock off 30 in six overs for maximum points so we went 20/20 style with the big guns, Rich Williams & Mikey (Macca 2) Holden. Mikey pleased with his new lookalike status claiming that he was chuffed to be compared to a 20,000 club run legend at such an early age. Faced with the task we set off as if we meant business, Rich played out a maiden(not sure if he fully understood J.P’s plan entirely) and Mikey was obviously feeling the pressure and missed a straight one, bagging a Golden. Joe Malton in at three had other ideas and with his mother's words ringing in his head before we left “Don’t be late home and don’t let your dad get talking else you will be there all night” he promptly despatched the bowling to all parts smashing an impressive 23 not out. Watching on Rich decided to join in and hit 2 singles to end up on an equally aggressive 2 not out and bag the win. Title winning form with that performance every week and a great start to the season. Long may it continue. Nice when the plans come together 06/30/2011
LINCS PREM: Nettleham 154 ao lost to Market Deeping 155-4 The best laid plans of Deeping skippers gang oft awry, but over this weekend a couple came nicely together. Deeping blooded some young players in this game, expecting a weak Nettleham performance, and basically that's what they got. Without Tommy Andrews, Deeping have been relying heavily on Lee Peacock, and the wily old left-armer struck again after Ali Sharp (1-42) had removed one opener. Peaky's 5-62 rattled Nettleham out quickly as he bowled nearly half the 36 overs it took. At one stage it was "can someone else play?" as the Cock and Josh Bowers combined to take three almost identical caught behinds. Greeny then went Rabbit hunting with 3-41 off six overs. Bringing the 15 year old Matt Rose into the game late on saw him strike as Gilly took a sharp catch. Alex Wheatley was the other Kevin in the side but sadly a wicked migraine ruled him out of opening. He recovered to hit the winning run. In his place the furiously pinch hitting Ali Sharp rushed his way to 59, as Chris Jones (11) leaned on his bat. Sharpy would be the first to admit he benefited from some dreadful fielding. Josh Bowers played straight man to Sharpy, then Gilly with a finely crafted 30 but perished trying to hit the winning runs, the proud skipper finishing on 45*. Newborough 2nd 132 lost to Deeping 213 The best laid plan on the Sunday was to field the strongest genuine 2nd XI possible as there was no first team game. Deeping won the toss and batted and one by one their superstars misfired, after Jordan Ropers somewhat fortuitous 30 none reached 20 and Deeping looked like making it an interesting game, before Matt Rose's arrival coincided with the lower order bowlers and his superb display of controlled hitting took the game away from Newboro. His 74* was backed by a calm 21 from skipper Rae as they added 80 odd. Newboro started well, before Rae (4-48) bowled a clever slower inswinger to dismiss Walker and Dan George (3-20) joined in. Matt Rose had recovered sufficiently to paralyse the middle order and his own slips and keeper as myriad chances went flying. Joe Sharapova Pearson grunted his way to 1-18 and Stu Presland whirled his arm at the other end for 1-23. Tommy's revenge 05/29/2011
LINCS PREM: MDDC Saturday 1st 225-9 beat Bourne 112 Bourne won the toss and put Deeping in and their opening pair looked lively. As Deeping played and missed they also took a battering with Witto being struck on some unusual parts of his anatomy as he patiently worked his way to 49. Josh Bowers could be proud of his controlled 38 but when the openers rested Peaky (59) smashed ex-Deeping spinner Will Trim into the new pond, and was joined by Gilly (22). Extras (44) had another fine game as Deeping reached 225 and the extra point. Bourne started calmy but when Ali Shin-Splints Sharp (2-16) yorked Morgan and had Stroud LBW, Deeping had made quick inroads. Tommy second-ball-duck Andrews had a point to prove but started slowly. A switch to the far end and some refreshing awarding of LBW decisions saw Bourne in more trouble as Texas took 5-37. Peaky weighed in with 2-34 and Greeny, who suffered from some brief tail-end aggression came through with 1-24. Deeping stay second in the Premier league. Rosie and Ryan rip Spalding 05/22/2011
Deeping Saturday 2nd 177-6 beat Spalding 1st 176ao by four wickets Knowing the strength of their opposition, Deeping expected a tough game. They fielded a decent batting side, but the bowling could have been stronger, and they had to recall the 1st XI scorer in order to field XI. They hadn't reckoned with the pace and fire of Matt Rose. In a hurry to reach his birthday party, he rattled out three Spalding batsmen for early ducks in his first four overs, all caught by the efficient Ryan Bainborough. Rosie ended up with five wickets for 41; Bainbo with five dismissals (four catches and a cheeky stumping). JP (3-45) kept it tight at the other end, then the steady Sam (Calm) Pateman (1-36) came on, but Sr. and Jr. Kearns got together to add 70 odd before Sam had Jr. caught by Rosie. Spalding never got going again, with Sr. practically paralysed by the unlucky but parsimonious Nick Andrews. Then the problems began as the skipper looked for his fifth bowler. Ryan Hyman (1-16) was equal to the challenge and the problem was solved when Kearns hoicked Hyman to Steve Windsor. JP struck and Rosie returned to polish off the tail - giving Deeping a vital extra over. There was more good fielding by Joe Malton and the lively Wheats. Another solid start by Andrews (26) and Wheats (32) set up a steady four an over run rate before both holed out. Matt Rose (19) got a swift score in the teens mostly in sixes and fours before rushing off to his party. Hyman (38) continued the good work and though the Duck got out quickly, Molly (27*)nudged and nurdled and ran furiously, eventually joined by Sam Pateman to get Deeping home in the 45th over. Tea-ing off at Sleaford 05/15/2011
Lincs Prem: Market Deeping 237-4 beat Sleaford 1st 233 Despite lacking some of the star names of recent years, Deeping's first teamers continue to overachieve. Sleaford found Ali Sharp (2-59) and Tom Andrews (2-33) tough to handle before rising young star Karl Green (3-57) and old lag Dan George (2-40 off 4 overs) finished them off. For once Jamie Morgan (17) failed but he and Chris Jones (11) Josh Bowers (8) and 28 from Birdy gave Deeping a steady start before skipper Gillett (74*) and in-form Tommy Andrews (80*) closed the door. South Lincs 1: Sleaford 2nds 234-7 beat Market Deeping 2nd 148 ao Ed's band of merry men travelled to a brisk Sleaford in hope of an awesome tea. Those who had been called up to the Ones were gonna miss an epic feed. With Ed losing yet another toss it was left to Matty Rose and super cougar Pearson to open the bowling. Rose started well with a wicket in the first over JP backed up the other end for 3 overs for 13 before Ed bought quickstep Andrews on for his first spell and he took a wicket. Young Sam Pateman replaced Rose and took a wicket in his third over with Baino taking a super catch. Nico bagged another, then Pearson claimed his first and only victim as Molly took a super catch in the deep to leave Sleaford on 234-7. To the important bit... Wheatley piled his plate high - it was like the twin towers there was a combo of Indian starters Chinese nibbles sarnies hot wedges and sausage rolls ample crisps... And pizza... And plenty of cakes. To the batting. A very angry Wheats made a good start and was very unlucky to get out. Andrews cruised making hay at times with the average bowling. Getting on for a cool 60 odd age was showing and he didn't have the power to dispatch the fodder and was caught on the boundary. Sam Pateman came in at three and nudged it around; the Duck came in at four to inform the ump that the bowler was bowling No Balls. He got a cheeky 9 Baino came and both went getting caught by Witto’s goofy Mate with identical catches. Rosey went in got angry got out. Shinko blazed a four after playing a defensive shot then got caught. Sam James got a golden stumping leaving Molly snr and Molly jnr to enjoy a bit of time in the middle. Joe played some nice shots and unfortunately got out leaving the Cougar to come in and try and get us to 150. Joe got one off the square, then Dilshaned one over the top of four slips and in trying to get the last few off the last over got cleaned up... A special mention must go to Wheats as someone must have switched places with him on the field today as he was nearly outstanding... Still needed Dad to talk him through it all in the deep though... Well I've been Shink Dog. Hope this wasn’t too controversial. Rave safe Check MDCC FB page for pre-match interviews. Rutland Six: Castor 2nd 86-2 beat Market Deeping 2nd 84ao Acting skipper Steve Windsor took ten men to Castor including six under 14s and two in their 50s. He then made the mistake of losing the toss and being put in. The sporting wicket on the very edge of the table proved challenging, but Richard Williams and Sam Pateman looked well equal to tthe challenge before Rich got a ball that flew off a length and screamed off his gloves. Sam was then run out in chaotic fashion, leaving the Maltons Joe and Sam at the crease and they too got well set before getting out - a pattern that continued throughout a disappointing innings with Deeping's new superstar Extras scoring the bulk of the runs. With the exception of two or three poor overs Deeping's youngsters then bowled extremely well, but in the main lacked the height to get the worst out the wicket. Deeping's star of the season so far, Sam Pateman, got the wicket and saw an easy catch go down. In two years time this will be a very exciting group of players (except those who have retired due extreme old age...) The tough get going... 05/10/2011
Lincs Premier: Woodhall Spa 262-8 Deeping 263- 4 Saturday saw the first team (well half of them and half the seconds) travel deep in to the countryside to face Woodhall Spa. It was a rainy with a light south east wind kind of a morning in the Deeping area, which is always what you want when faced with a 100 mile round trip to go and maybe or maybe not play cricket. Anyway to the game, Gilly won the toss and decided to put Woodhall in to bat. With the normal opening bowlers AWOL it was left to Sharpy to start and the BXP to try and help. Rossgo did not have his best spell of bowling ever, so was replaced with Green dog after five. Sharpy(2-73) got rid of the two openers and went on to bowl really well with no reward whatsoever. Green dog from the other end bowled one of his longest spells ever, but picked up 4-51 which included a hat trick that was so good he will be talking about it for the same amount of time that Gilly talks about his 50 at Lords. Danno grabbed 2 for 50 and Jamie also had a spell at the end. There were times when the Captain was even thinking about bringing himself on, but the second team attack did the job well enough for this not to happen. This left Woodhall on a better than expected total of 262-8. Salad was served for tea, which went down like a fart in a lift with Brillo and dangerous Dan, both asking the question of ''Do I looking like a frickin rabbit?" It may of been the healthy option for the older members of the side, but for those who spend their time playing X box it was a bit of shock to the system. Jonah was coming off the back of a big ton and a score of 92 for the MCC in the same week, including one at the home of cricket, Lords. Jamie describing his own form as simply awesome, and they started very well indeed with an opening partnership of 158, Jamie went after a great knock of 78 (he still hates cricket though and was claiming a torn muscle in his leg). Jonah went on to a make 109 and was unlucky not to see out the game after getting out to what seemed a clear no ball. Big Mac got himself another 40 odd which left the skipper and the pest (Sharpy) 14 runs to finish it off with a few overs and the massive fire power of Kevin, Danno, forest Green, BXP and Mikey left in the bank. You stay classy MDCC, I'm the BXP. Deeping Saturday 2nd 210 - 8 vs Bourne 2s 177-6 Bourne arrived at fortress Outgang to see a tent pitched up with a rather damp lookin Stroudy stood outside. Must have been dreaming about playing at a good ground every week. As the team assembled on a humid Saturday lunchtime Ed "the captain" Davis got out his white board marker out and started discussing tactics with the Bald eagle (they were netball tactics)! It seems Bourne’s investments in overseas and other pros has rubbed off on the 2nd team as well as Bourne proceeded to wear the outfield out with a military warm up. With the toss out of the way (which Ed lost) a new opening combo of Nick " I may need a wheelchair" Andrews and the mighty super Joe Pearson put on their pads. It was an interesting start with the first ball going for four byes. Andrews got off to a good start and super JP was the first to go with a ten over duck. Molly and Nick grafted away with some interesting deliveries. Nick departed on 30 after trying launch the ball to Langtoft and getting caught. Molly continued to middle everything at the fielders and was caught out on 11. Baino skated out to the middle to join the Duck the pair lasted well. Ed cruised to 59 before controversially leaving a straight one. Baino helped Ed along with 20 odd. Shinko came and went not troubling the book, beforeTippers who had played for Deeping for well over 10 years before playing this, his first match against Bourne, came in and smashead it all over to get 32 not out. Rose went after a few overs leaving Sam Pateman to calmly give Tippers the strike for the last few overs. Time was called and with 210 on the board the captain and even Molly was pleased. Mrs Malton put on a super spread nice selection of sarnies and super home-made cakes. As we took the field defending our total shouldn't have been a problem. Old timer Andrews opened the bowling (12-2-28-2 )with his new one step quick step bowling action so we rattled through the overs and it got the batsman rattled. Matty Rose was the thorn in the side of the opening pair keeping it tight(10-1-37-2) he took the first wicket after just 5 overs. Super Joe bowled his 12-1-48-1. Deeping were unlucky in the field with a couple of catches going down and a few balls landing in space. As the light faded the skipper bought some pace into the attack bringing Rose (2-37) and Shinkins (1-36) on to skittle a few at the end. Bourne ran out of overs and couldn't reach the target even with big sixes from the rotund Bourne wicket keeper Milne (pot kettle Shinks. Ed.). Good win all round from a team with a few new faces that didn't disappoint. Standing in for the bxp this week I've been Shink dog. Rave safe Rutland One: Bourne 91 lost to Deeping 93-1 Like the Saturday 2nd XI this team featured a Sunday 2nd XI strike force, but Deeping's second string proved more than capable, as Ben Rae (3-30) Matt Rose (1-28) Dan George with a staggering 4-8, Tom Shinkins 1-13 and Richard Witt rattled out Bourne. Jaimie Morgan (53) then put his brother to shame as Deeping cruised home. Friendly: Sunday development squad 138-4 lost to Wansford 163 all out. There was talk that Deeping couldn't raise a side for this game, but how wrong that proved. A very young side indeed played the adults of Wansford, with three Maltons and the very young Patrick Brown bringing the age profile down radically despite the presence of old lags Windsor and Hyman. Yet another Greeny, Karl's brother Mike (2-23) removed one opener, but at the other end the ball was being smashed around. Mike Holden (3-26) removed the danger man for 63, then the not yet teenager Brown (3-24) bowled incredibly well to remove the middle order. Sam James bowled extremely well for no reward, and man of the match Sam Pateman (2-19) returned to clean up the tail by the last of 40 overs. Deeping were in trouble at 26-4 but very calmly Pateman grafted his way to a fine 74 not out, backed by the cheeky smears and quick runs of Sam Malton 31 not out, as Deeping refused to lose another wicket, even when the opening quicks returned. It was a remarkable day for the young players to complete an amazingly successful weekend for the club. Texas Peaks destroy Boston 05/03/2011
Lincs Prem: Deeping 201 for seven beat Boston, 195 all out Boston steamed away to a great start in their Premier League encounter with Deeeping, as Jonathan Cheer and overseas player Matthew Ward smashed some short pitched bowling at will. But Cheer carved loosely at Andrews to be very well caught by Bird at gulley, and Peacock (4-38) entered the attack, quickly removing Ward, Poole, Baxter and Tether. Tom Anderson recovered from a tough first over to take 1-25 and Andrews returned to mop up the tail with 4-70, aided by Richard Witt 1-26. The target was a get-able 195. Or so it seemed until Deeping were rapidly reduced to 3-3 in the second over. Josh Bowers with a careful 14 and Dave Gillett (41) led the revival, and Tom Andrews began to score freely on his way to 64*. He was joined by Peaky after some pantomime gestures from his skipper. Peaks was dropped early doors but went on to smash the umpire and 51 vital runs. A little scrappy tail end batting got Deeping home, and with the scores even, Texas lifted the last ball into the pavillion for six. Deeping won with seven overs to spare but not too many wickets... South Lincs 1: Market Deeping 2nd 93 lost to Billingborough 1st by nine wickets On another warmish Saturday afternoon Market Deeping 2nd XI took on the current league champions Billingborough. There was a new award on offer every week for the most stupid comment/act and the team were eager to find out who would be the first owner of the d**k of the day jacket. After what looked like a good toss to win Ed (I've won all three tosses so far) Davies elected to bat on what looked a good deck. Openers Nick "deeping legend " Andrews and Alex "future deeping legend" Wheatley set about building a total. Billingborough were armed with a couple of new New Zealanders. Nick (0) and Alex (5) didn't stay too long both being caught behind off the new pro. Angry Dan (9) looked to be aggressive early on in his innings but was a victim of a good yorker. Ed was next to go after surprisingly getting out on his favourite shot caught off the back of the bat. Molly stuck around for a while but got an under-edge onto his stumps off the very annoying Billingborough bowler. Things looked ominous as Deeping were 25-5, but step forward Baino who constructed a controlled and gritty knock, and ended up with 33 (deserved 50) which helped us to get a more substantial total than had seemed possible. Bxp, Rosey and Pickers all got in and got out quickly before Shinko had one of his moments and bludgeoned his way to 17 before he couldn’t resist slashing at a straight one which he missed and Deeping ended up with 93. After tea Billingborough started their reply, with Rosey getting the well deserved wicket of one New Zealander that caused some early excitement in the Deeping ranks, but Billingborough slogged their way to 93 in quick time and Deeping were left with no points. Kevin Rutland Six: Deeping Sunday 2nd 113 all out lost to Weldon Sunday 1st 134 all out Frustrated Deeping left Corby dreaming of what might have been. Last season Weldon hit several hundred against Deeping who rapidly succumbed; this year it was a darn close run thing. An awful pitch and 48 extras proved to be the levellers that nearly saw Deeping home. A really good debut by Sam Pateman with 3-32 and excellent bowling by JP and Ben Rae (3-39 and 2-42) found all the snakes in the pitch, backed by three standing up catches by B'boro. Tippers popped up to take 2-9 off one over at the death. A late blitz by Weldon's Bulbring (53) turned out to be match-winning Weldon's bowling is strong and their fielding is good, but the pace of their opener and the terribly uneven bounce gave their acting wicketkeeper no chance and he conceded 30 byes. Cummins of Weldon is genuinely quick and he sliced through Deeping's inexperienced batting (and Williams and Tiplady) with five for 18 off 7.5 overs. A mid-innings rally saw JP 20*, Ben Rae 7 and Adam Hyman 21 threaten to get Deeping home but they gave away some daft wickets and couldn't quite creep over the line. Sarah gets her cup cakes out 04/24/2011
(All opinions in this report are those of the BXP and do not necessarily reflect the editorial stance of this website or MDCC!) Saturday saw the start of the 1st XI's Premier League season, and the start of the stealing players season. Dave (look at me, I'm the captain, I scored a 50 at Lords ask me about it sometime, I've got the most 100's in MDCC history, you won't look this good when your 53, so I'll rob all the second team key players that I want) Gillett decided that he would tear the heart and soul out of the seconds. With the removal of the big Shink Dog and the small but deadly Molly, the seconds did not look as strong in the batting (Shinks - batting - shurely shome mistake. Ed) line up as they did last week. But with those two and the rest of the first team heading up north for a jolly boys outing at the seaside in the lovely early season heat and sun-shee-ine, it was left to Baino the stopper, super Joe, dangerous Dan and the marvellous Matt Rose to fill the void. You may think that I am padding in this weeks report a little, but that's because I am. The game was not full of highlights, so please forgive me for trying to fill the page with some sort of cricket related talk. Deeping faced a Belton Park team who had the luxury this week of changing in a building made of bricks, with showers, indoor plumbing, a bar, big white things behind the bowler's arm and a decent track. Deeping won the toss (Belton called but lost) and elected to bat (Belton had only eight players to start with). The crowds started to pour in to Outgang Rd looking forward to a run fest on this mega hot April afternoon. Things should have started well, with all these gaping holes in the field surely Nick and Kevin the teenager (sorry Wheato) would express themselves and build a total for MDCC. This didn't happen. Nick went, then an injured Witto went shortly followed by the rest. Deeping only got three of their players into double figures. The bright spot was Kevin (Wheato) who got his first 50 of the season with a great knock. He scored runs all over the park with some breathtaking shots, but then had a rush of blood after getting to the 50 mark and decided to go dancing down the track. He missed and the keeper thanked him. Dan George (19) looked in good nick as he returned to the team, and got himself in (and Green dog run out). The BXP (Baston Express) hit two massive 6's with his first two scoring shots to get a very quick 15. Deeping finished with just 126. Tea was served by the soon to be Mrs BXP with a vast selection which included the great idea(and tasting) MDCC coloured cup cakes. These cakes went down very well and were the best part of an other wise dull day. After a great tea Deeping took to the field with a very low total to protect, they didn't manage it and although everyone bowled quite well, Belton took an age to knock off the runs they needed only losing one wicket doing so. Matty Rose does deserve a mention as his bowling display was head and shoulders above anyone else. He took the only Belton wicket, but off his 12 overs had 6 maidens for only 20 odd. Roll on to the bright lights of the league champs Billingborough next week, and with the first team at home Gilly should have all his first choice team 1st XI available for selection. I'm the BXP, you stay classy MDCC Stiffies all round 04/18/2011
The first game of a new season sees everyone a little bit rusty, with players having to dust off or even find kit (or wash it from last season). The season's opener was against Boston, and their last season was not too different from Deepings. Deeping started with what looked like a very strong batting line up. The massive fire power of Shinkings, Sharp, Green and Lowndes were left to fight it out for who batted at 11. There was also a fight for who would open (due to the Andrews stair lift malfunction) causing him to be very late on the first day. To the game (at last). Deeping got off to a good start, Nick went for 16 after smashing a six over the tennis courts (showing off to the wife) and then getting bowled the very next ball. When Wheato (31) finally faced a ball (went the first 4 overs without) he and Witto (a great knock of 69) set about building a solid total for Deeping.New skipper Ed and Sharpy chipped in with 26 and 23 respectedly and Molly hit a quick 12 not out at the end. But the star of the show was Ross with a run rate of 400 (4 off the last ball). Shinko got his first Golden of the season. Deeping finished with a good score of 215. After a very fruity tea (cheers Ed) Deeping set about bowling Boston out. The Baston express (1-23) took the first wicket with a great C&B, but after that, the pace attack didn't bring any more wickets, so it was left to the rip, dip and turn of Snr pro (2-42) and Whippo (3-54) to tear the heart out of the Boston middle order. After far too many dropped catches Deeping finally managed to get a grip on a game that they could have very easily thrown away. Ben Lewis made up for a poor batting performace with a good display in the field and got a cuple of catches as a reward. Molly also took a few which left the Green dog (3-26) to clean up the tail. Ali (no ball) Sharp was left with nothing, but can go away thinking that at least very few runs that were scored from his bowling came off the bat. Boston finished 202 all out, giving Deeping 20 points and putting them at the top of the league.(At least one Deeping team knows what it feels like up there..... Yes Gill I'm talking to you!) The mint shower gel also went down very well in the team showers. You stay classy MDCC, I'm The Baston Express. |
